PBS - The 50 Years War - Israel and the Arabs 2 of 22wXebyT1kCw Tube. Duration : 146.48 Mins.

PBS home video documents the bitter 50-year war between the Israelis and Arabs. This program begins with the 1947 decision of the UN to partition Palestine. In 1948 and 1967, Arab armies were defeated as Israel struggled for statehood. The film follows the development of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. The final episode features the 1973 Yom Kipper War, the 1978 Camp David Peace Accord, the 1987 Palestinian uprising, the 1993 Oslo Agreement, and continuing attempts to solidify this unstable relationship. Featured in this documentary are Benjamin Netanyahu, Shimon Peres, and Yitzhak Shamir of Israel; King Hussein of Jordan; Yasir Arafat from the Palestine Authority; Hafez al-Assad of Syria; Jafaar Numeiry of Sudan; and American Presidents Bill Clinton, George Bush, and Jimmy Carter. The 50 Years War: Israel and the Arabs follows a half-century of war, struggles, and negotiations. The conflict in the Middle East between Israel and its neighbors is given comprehensive treatment in this two-video set produced by PBS. Using archival footage and extensive interviews with participants, the production begins by explaining conditions in Palestine at the end of World War II and the crisis created by the exodus of European Jews who went to the Middle East after the Holocaust. The withdrawal of the British, who had controlled Palestine for decades, is detailed, as is the creation of the state of Israel. Much of the region's history is complex, with the local struggles being ...Geneva Womens Watches Clear

European Civilization, 1648-1945 (HIST 202) Socialism in the nineteenth century can be divided into two different strains of thought, reformist and revolutionary. While reformist socialists believed in changing the State through legal activity, such as voting, revolutionary socialists viewed such measures as ineffective and perhaps even complicit in maintaining the status quo. Along the spectrum of leftwing political thought, syndicalists and anarchists shared the conviction that the State could not be reformed from within. In some cases, this conviction resulted in acts of violence, so-called propaganda by the deed. Émile Henry, a French anarchist, was among the first militants to target civilian rather than official targets; as such, he can be seen as one of the first modern terrorists. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Raymond Weil Women's 5229-STS-00659 Jasmine Diamond Stainless-Steel Bracelet Watch Overview

In 1976, m. Raymond weil, who had previously been a watch designer for another company, founded the watch house that bears his name in geneva, switzerland. The 1970s, when quartz watches shook the foundations of the mechanical watches market, is remembered as a hard time by all watch companies. It was a common belief by some consumers that there was no need for them anymore; after all, quartz watches were more accurate, did not need winding, and were infinitely cheaper to produce. These were hard times enough that it is a surprise to some that the industry survived as well as it did – it is even more surprising to learn that for raymond weil, these dark days were the hour of its birth. As one of the newer swiss watch houses, raymond weil has built up a prestigious reputation in a short period of time. Quality speaks for itself, and raymond weil’s watches were so fine, word quickly spread. The number of dealerships then increased with the founder becoming highly sought after and much in demand. Raymond weil produced watches characterized by elegance and simplicity. His watches bring together a subtle blend of trend and tradition. Their exquisite line, beautiful materials and meticulous finishing appeal to people of all tastes. Both chic and practical, raymond weil watches are suitable for all occasions. Drawing on swiss watch making expertise, raymond weil focuses on creativity and quality in order to offer its clients an impressive diversity of models to match each individual and unique personality. Attention to detail is never compromised with raymond weil. It is one of the last independent brands in the luxury swiss watch industry.

The Beauty of Designer Watches - What to Look Out for When Buying a Watch

Watches are both attractive and functional. Designer watches for both men and women are always in vogue, despite indications that say that younger people have stopped wearing watches. The reasoning behind this idea is that people are more likely to tell the time from their mobile phones. But there is more to watches than the ability to tell the time! A watch is a superb accessory that can complement and enhance any outfit, whether formal or casual. Watches are jewellery too, and an attractive one will garner compliments.

A well-designed watch is a thing of delight, something that can be handed down to your children to treasure. Designer men's watches can be made of gold, silver, platinum, titanium or even from the hull of the Titanic! Geneva-based Romain Jerome took metal form Titanic and blended it with modern shipbuilding steel. Coal which was to have been burned in the Titanic's furnaces and which was also recovered from the seabed has been mixed with ceramics to create black dials for the watches. These went on sale for up to £75,000. But you don't need to break the bank to find what you want.

Geneva Womens Watches Clear

Women's designer watches can also be made of precious metals, and often are enhanced with diamonds, or Austrian or Swarovski crystals. These are more likely to be dress watches.

The Beauty of Designer Watches - What to Look Out for When Buying a Watch

Watch styles range from Divers watches, Military watches, sport watches, vintage and retro styles.

What should you look out for when purchasing? If your eyesight is as bad as mine, then the first thing to look for is a good clear dial so you can see the time! Apart from the practicalities such as day/date, size of dial, and whether you want Roman numerals or digital display, a funky design or classic, you should also consider whether it is for everyday wear, or to be worn for best. Fashionable watches include brands such as Storm, Diesel and Guess, while Tag Heuer, Gucci and Cartier cover the expensive end of the spectrum. A fine Cartier watch for example can cost several thousand pounds, but if looked after retains value and can be sold on at a later date. On the other hand, quality need not mean expensive- a good watch from D&G, or Tissot can combine style with affordability so there is no need to spend more than you need in these difficult times! Funky or functional, the choice is yours.

Panerai Watch Reviews - The Lumina Marina

I've been a fan of Panerai watches for years. I like just about the entire collection from Panerai but there's one that, for me, that is special - the Panerai Lumina Marina PAM00104.

Panerai started making watches for the Italian navy. The company is now Swiss based. The overall look and design of Panerai watches hasn't changed that much since they were first manufactured. Some technical advances have been made to the movements of course along with the appearance of the lugs that can be easily removed to replace the strap - in the old days the leather straps were not really designed to be replaced. And talking of straps, like most diving watches, Panerai now come with rubber straps. Titanium casings are now also available. But, essentially when you buy a Panerai watch you'll be buying something that your grand parents would feel comfortable wearing.

Geneva Womens Watches Clear

However, I should stress that not everyone will feel comfortable wearing a Panerai diving watch. The Lumina Marina is 44 mm in diameter and many might feel that this watch was rather too large for their wrist. There is a 40 mm model available for those who prefer a somewhat smaller watch.

Panerai Watch Reviews - The Lumina Marina

The Panerai Lumina Marina is heavy and feels as though it's solidly built. If you're going to wear a large watch, you want it to feel robust and tough enough to withstand whatever you throw at it. For such a large watch, the crown of the Lumina is thin; however it has a large crown-guard with the Panerai patented open/close-system to keep it water-resistant.

The slightly rounded sapphire crystal really does complement the rounded lugs and soft curves of the case. In fact, the casing has a definite 'soft' look to it, which helps to 'lighten' the appearance of the large case as well as remind you of the workmanship that goes into the making of the case and watch overall.

The dial of the Panerai Lumina Marina PAM00104 is black. The dial can also be had in white, though I like my watch faces to be black on sports watches. A small point: the dial is black; there is no patterning or any other 'effects'. This is something I really appreciate about the Lumina from Panerai; the dial has a simple understatement that will stand the test of time. The minute and hour hands are simple in design; straight with triangular points, they are luminescent with a black rim. Another fine detail is the length of the minute hand; it stops short of the indices - I don't like arms that actually seem to touch or fall on the indices. Oddly, the second hand - which is contained in a subsidiary dial - is of a different shape; it is an ellipse with a small ball-shape as a counterweight on the other side of the pinion. I can't make up my mind if I like the shape of the second hand or would prefer it to have matched that of the other two. Finally, the indices are large Arabic numerals, the numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock being slightly larger. Overall, the dial of the Panerai Lumina Marina PAM00104 is clear, easy to read with an understated elegance.

The Panerai Lumina comes with automatic mechanical movement - the exclusive Panerai OP III caliber that is 13¼ lignes and comes with 21 jewels. There is Côtes de Genève decoration on the bridges. The movement comes with PANERAI personalized oscillating weight and Glucydur balance with 28,800 alternations/hour. The watch has an Incabloc anti-shock device. The movement is rated COSC. The Lumina has a power reserve of 42 hours.

The black leather straps of the Panerai Lumina are good. You also get a rubber strap with this model. The buckle is brushed metal and comes with the Panerai logo. Unlike most watches, the straps are attached to the case by screws rather than springbars - you use the screwdriver that comes with the watch to remove the screws from the case and strap. I like this feature; you feel the straps are properly secured to the casing. To be really safe, Panerai has put a small steel cylinder in the pinholes of the strap which you have to remove and put in the holes of the rubber strap.

Despite Panerai watches originally being made for diving, I find myself wearing this watch for all occasions. Its simple, elegant dial and the rounded contours of the casing allow me to wear the watch on formal occasions, while its chunkiness and obvious outdoor pedigree also make it ideal for sports activities. The Panerai Lumina Marina PAM00104 is a watch I now I shall wear for many years without feeling the need to replace it.

The international community must band together in pressuring Syrian leader Bashar Assad to step down and put and end to the killing of Syrian citizens, US President Barack Obama said on Friday. His comments came as rescue workers began evacuating wounded civilians from a besieged Syrian city. "All of us seeing the terrible pictures coming out of Syria and Homs recently recognize it is absolutely imperative for the international community to rally in sending a clear message to President Assad that it is time for a transition," Obama told reporters. "It is prime time to stop the killing of Syrian citizens by their own government," he said after a meeting with Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt of Denmark. Meanwhile, the Syrian Arab Red Crescent began evacuating wounded or sick women and children from the Baba Amro district of the besieged city of Homs on Friday as international pressure mounted on the Syrian government to open the country up to humanitarian aid. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said the evacuation was underway after Syrian Arab Red Crescent ambulances had entered Baba Amro. "It's a first step forward," ICRC chief spokeswoman Carla Haddad told Reuters in Geneva. News of the evacuation came as Gulf Arab nations meeting in Tunis ...Geneva Womens Watches Clear

Guide to Buying and Selling Diamonds

With the myriad of jewelry stores around both online and offline it can be difficult to make a decision on where to buy or sell your diamonds. It's important to take some time to educate yourself on what to look for in a diamond before buying or selling.

One thing you must realize when buying or selling is that diamonds are measured by weight, so you will find that not all diamonds with the same carat look similar. If the diamond was cut poorly it will diminish the value and it will have less fire than an optimally cut diamond. Sometimes diamonds are cut wide to appear larger, but again it will not have the brilliance of a properly cut diamond. Reputable jewelers will be able to show you if the table and depth proportions are optimal. There are also different grading companies such as GIA, IGI, EGL, and others that don't grade equally so for the purpose of this article we will stick to the general qualities to look for when buying or selling diamonds.

Geneva Womens Watches Clear

Another thing to consider when buying or selling a diamond is the clarity. Almost all diamonds have some flaws, but diamonds that have fewer flaws will fetch a higher price. That isn't to say you should you look to get a flawless diamond only, as personal preference comes into play and sometimes flaws add to the character of the diamond.

Guide to Buying and Selling Diamonds

Color is another factor to take into consideration and it refers to the absence or presence of color in a white diamond. The less color (or more "white" a diamond appears) the more fire and brilliance it will have, as a greater amount of light is allowed to pass through than a colored diamond. Thus the less color present, the greater it's value. This however doesn't refer to fancy colored diamonds that can actually be more valuable because of their color. These are very rare and can come in a variety of colors.

So whether you are buying or selling diamonds it will benefit you to check around with a few reputable jewelers before making your decision. Look for a jeweler that explains everything in a very clear fashion and doesn't rush you into buying or selling prematurely. The extra time you take in the process will allow you to get a better value when buying a diamond and will help you ascertain that you are getting a good deal when you sell diamonds.

International Conference on Camp Ashraf and Iran Policy 1. The abhorrent and barbaric execution of Jafar Kazemi and Mohammad Ali Hajaghaei, two activists of People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI) on January 24 was condemned and clearly showed the clerical regime's anxiety and fear on growing support for Iranian resistance and Ashraf residents 2. A soft approach vis-à-vis the Iranian regime is futile; a firm approach is needed for a proper policy; 3. Regime change in Iran is the only way that can rid the region and the world from the wickedness of a religious dictatorship that is equipped with nuclear bomb, and from an unpredictable war. 4. The growing trend of gross and systematic violations of human rights and executions by the Iranian regime must be strongly condemned, and for these barbaric acts alongside its export of terrorism and nuclear weapons program be targeted by comprehensive sanctions. 5. The key elements for change are the Iranian people, the Resistance and the third option proposed by Mrs. Rajavi. 6. This Resistance, as it has repeatedly declared on a number of occasions, neither wants money nor weapons. It must be recognized and all obstacles that have been placed in its path at the behest of the Iranian regime must be set aside so that it could exercise all its power in bringing about change to Iran. 7. www.bulsar.de American Vagabonds on Grand Tour This is my favourite amateur film. The photographer has a true interest in places, sights and buildings visited, and most of the footage has high quality. Some young Americans - "Bill and I" - travel in Europe, probably in 1936 (the airship Hindenburg is seen passing Cologne heading towards Berlin). They leave New York in march and sail home in the autumn. They go by boat and train and come to many places Lisbon, Gibraltar, Algiers, Palermo, Naples, Capri, Monaco, Geneva, Wengen, Lucerne, Cologne, Brussels, Vienna, Budapest, Salzburg, Munich and Berlin. I don't know who these people are, or if they did something more than sightseeing during this half year. You get glimpses of personal life, but in the end you find anonymity. Their tourist perspective seems to change during the trip. First they see "picturesque" and "strange" things. Algiers is a "city of contrasts". They come to "The modern French section", and then see "some strange sights in the old Arabic quarters". Some women in hijabs run away from the offensive tourist camera, while some boys laugh - at the Americans. In Vienna, Budapest and Berlin they see more of the ordinary life between the great buildings, and they see the Nazis. There are great pictures of Nazis marching in Berlin and of the people watching. Near the end, now in colour, we see a brown house with bright red Nazi flags waving in the wind. Bill stands in front of this house. Strange enough, his ...Geneva Womens Watches Clear

Studying Nature in Mexico is an Unforgettable Adventure

After spending many vacations in Cancun, Mexico, I decided to take the plunge and move there to study the beautiful nature I'd admired in my previous trips. Having lived many years in the comfort and safety of American suburbia, it was time for some adventure. After learning Spanish, I went to the Yucatan and rented a home in suburban Playa del Carmen and hired myself a maid. Then, with help from hired guides and friends, I visited a variety of remote places in the Mexican jungles. It was an unforgettable experience to see a variety of animals in their natural habitats.

The ever-growing city of Playa del Carmen is an hour south of Cancun, and easily accessed by public buses. Both cities are on the Caribbean Sea, where coral reefs abound up and down the coastline. The beauty of pure white, limestone sand, and richly colored, turquoise water of the ocean drew me down there. Being a nature artist, I was fascinated by the plants and animals of the region. Armed with my cameras, drawing paper and pens, I got to work drawing and photographing bugs, birds, plants and anything else exotic. Soon, my artwork landed me a job as main illustrator for a large nature park called XCaret.

Geneva Womens Watches Clear

Whenever I had a drawing to deliver to my employer, I would board the employee bus for XCaret, and then walk down a long, back jungle path next to the park to the office. These walks fascinated me, due to the path was directly next to fenced enclosures for their zoo and aviary. Flamingoes, spider monkeys and a harpy eagle were animals I could see the best from the path. One time I made the mistake of giving one of the monkeys a cookie, only to see the other monkeys chase after him to steal it, trying to beat him up! I quickly got out a couple more cookies and gave the rest to them, to avoid the original monkey from getting hurt. They all sat there munching peacefully as I snuck off, hoping nobody saw.

Studying Nature in Mexico is an Unforgettable Adventure

In Mexico, you will see iguanas in nature frequently. As I walked down the nature path on my way to work, there was rustling in the big tree near me. I looked up only to see a large, 6 foot green iguana male with bright orange fringe on his back, in the canopy of the tree. He looked down at me. I remember people telling me that iguanas are good eating, taste like chicken, and that they are called "chicken of the tree". I never found out if that was true or not, but then, I wasn't about to go eating iguanas. Nope, I'm not that adventurous in my dining choices. Black iguanas can be seen usually sitting one per rock pile. Everywhere there were rocks, were male iguanas sunning themselves. Interesting creatures. In Chankanaab Park (on the island of Cozumel) there is a huge iguana that walks around public areas, oblivious to the humans that walk past it. It will bite if petted, the park employee told me. So, I took photos of it and kept my distance.

Another lizard that was interesting and plentiful, was Basiliscus basiliscus, the basilisk. There are a few varieties of basilisk to be found in Mexico. It can run on water if it gets scared enough, and I witnessed it after scaring one unintentionally. Later, I found a smaller one and drew it for my job, they have intense eyes, looking very serious. When I was finished drawing him, he ran upright into the jungle, glad to be free of the big, scary human with whom he'd spent a few hours with.

The jungles of Mexico are fascinating, but I would never recommend walking off your path into one. First off, the foliage is very dense. Second, there are critters in there that can hurt you if provoked, namely scorpions, snakes and spiders. Look, but don't touch. I have seen all of these, and have paid people to remove them from my home. Scorpions will come after you if they are agitated. Back away quickly, wherever they cannot follow. The lighter colored ones, I was told, are more dangerous than the black ones. There are tarantulas in Mexico, and they are big but not aggressive, thank goodness. I had a red-kneed tarantula taken away from the front of my door once. My maid used to throw out other spiders she found inside, and laugh when I would be freaked out by them. "This? It's harmless!" she'd tell me. Yuck. I took her word for it.

As for snakes, there are a few that are reason enough not to go walking alone in the jungle. First, there are huge boa constrictors. My ex-husband was called by the ladies next door, to remove a 6-foot boa out of their rental flat. They said it just slithered into the open back door. Lesson learned, never leave an open door to your house if you live close to the jungle. Then, there is a crimson colored snake the locals called Coralio. I don't know its scientific name, but it was beautiful but deadly. A man who lived near me had a whole apartment full of snakes, and he showed them to me up close. Snakes are interesting but it pays to watch where you step, since my ex and I nearly stepped on one during an evening walk. There are other snakes to watch out for, but these are the kinds that we saw. All snakes will mind their own business if unprovoked, it seems, trouble seems to be when humans aren't paying attention and step on one by mistake. So, it pays to watch where you walk.

Then there were the amazing birds. A gorgeous variety of colors, shapes and sizes, birds in Mexico are exotic and fascinating. My favorites were the toco toucan, motmot, currasows, Yucatan jay, cinnamon-colored cuckoo, and pileated woodpecker and violaceous trogon (a relative of the resplendent quetzal). They had a knack for showing themselves whenever I didn't have my camera with me. I did draw and take notes of what I saw, then look them up later. There was a bird that was so colorful that locals called it, "siete colores" (seven colors). After looking it up, I identified it as a painted bunting. Another bird locals call "pecho amarillo"(yellow breast), otherwise known as the great kiskadee, used to sit outside my window and yell, "Eeee, Eeee!" at the top of his lungs. We used to call back at him, and he'd answer. Very funny bird.

In Playa del Carmen, there is an outdoor aviary, built into the jungle, in the Playacar section. I went in there and walked around, to see the different birds that usually are hidden by jungle. One bird took a fancy to me, a barred currasow who followed me everywhere. She was my feathered tour guide, and posed for photos freely. I finally got to see a chachalaca up close, a relative to a turkey, that is shy, loud (its call sounds like a rusty meat grinder), and travels in groups. Also, there were red ibis, more flamingos, egrets, and much more. The aviary is a must see if you visit Playacar.

Another interesting natural sector in the Yucatan were all the bugs. Insects of every kind, in great quantities. I could've done without all the mosquitoes, though, thank goodness for bug repellent. My favorites were the butterflies. Sometimes when driving down remote roads, we came across undulating masses of various butterfiles colored yellow, white or black. Monarch butterflies also migrate in large groups down to Mexico, I saw them once, too. The most beautiful butterfly I came across in the wild, in my opinion, was the morpho butterfly. It has large irridescent blue wings, wasn't as common as other butterflies, and preferred the privacy of non-populated areas like fields and jungles. There was another butterfly that was big, brown and with its wings closed, was the size of a large dinner plate. It was called an owl butterfly, and flew slowly. I got really close to him and he seemed unafraid. He had patterns on his wings that were like numbers. Fascinating.

Beetles. Ahh, beetles..not very graceful, and apparently not all that bright, but endearing with their less than graceful antics. There were golden scarab beetles that used to fly into my window as I was working, frequently. They usually landed on their backs with their feet flailing helplessly in the air. Eventually the situation would rely on me turning them right-side up, some would then fly off, others would somehow end up on their backs again. It was odd, but I took the opportunity to draw these metallically colored insects, who looked as if they were gilded in brushed gold.

Grasshoppers and katydids are in large quantity in the jungles of the Yucatan. There are so many varieties of grasshoppers, I lost count. As for katydids. their bodies are gigantic, the size of a sparrow. I caught one, to draw him, then when I let him go off my balcony, he flew away in a straight path. His big, green body was visible for a very long time as he flapped off into the sunset, it was surreal.

Sea creatures and fish are plentiful in the Caribbean Sea. Though the reefs are endangered and show signs of damage, they are still beautiful. Every day, I'd snorkel in the low-traffic area near my home. It was serene to get to the beach early in the morning, pick up a few shells that washed up on shore, then make my spot on the beach. I'd snorkel until my body got cold, every day. There weren't many large predators in the areas I swam in, due to the breakwalls that run up and down the coast, separating the shores from the deeper, ocean water. Once in awhile, a barracuda would find its way into the reef area, my, what big teeth they have. Out there, you can see dolphins playing in the waves made by large yachts or ferries. Bottle-nosed dolphins are very social creatures and seem unafraid of humans. Some of the most memorable smaller fish and creatures I saw were brittle starfish (they live under rocks and will climb off your hand quickly if you try to hold one), octopus, conch, sea turtles, moray eels, blue tangs and of course, those feisty damselfish. Though I haven't gotten my scuba license, I went on a few professional scuba tours where the water was so shallow, snorkeling was possible. Tours are great for finding gorgeous coral gardens that aren't visible to everyone else. The prettiest ones I saw were near the town of Puerto Morelos.

Other places I liked to explore were the Cenotes Azul, and Dos Ojos. Cenotes are brackish water natural bodies of water that the Mayan indians used to build their villages around. Now, they sit in the jungle and tourists enter them to go cave diving. Underneath the Yucatan is an elaborate network of caves that attract cave-divers from all over the world. Not me, I preferred just swimming in the crystal clear water in the mouth of the cenotes, and observing the fish I saw. One of the cenotes had fish that I'd seen in pet stores back in the US, swimming there naturally. Jack Dempsey fish and green sailfin mollies, along with a kind of livebearer fish I didn't recognise. They were very colorful, and the Dempseys, being combative cichlids who like to pick on one another, had tattered fins. But, all the fish were very healthy. What a wonder it is to swim among them in their natural habitat. The nature around cenotes is interesting, too. I saw a basilisk run across the water, when I swam too close to him, and a duck that would dive for fish and stay underwater for a long time. Nature abounds in and around cenotes.

The nature of Mexico is plentiful and beautiful in all its forms. The tropical, hot climate brings out flora and fauna unlike anything I've ever seen in my home state of Ohio, or even in my current state of Florida. Living among the lush jungles, hearing jungle frogs sing at night and spending time with my wonderful Mexican co-workers, guides and friends changed my life. By being respectful of nature (look, don't touch) and watching where you walk, you will see clouds of butterflies, brilliantly colored birds, and animals like coatimundis, agoutis and others normally only seen in zoos. My employer promoted the preservation of Mexico's wildlife, and it was my honor doing artwork of all things natural for them. I miss walking the jungle path to their office weekly and seeing the zoo animals, as well as the wild ones in the trees. If you love nature, make sure to visit Mexico and go on tours to see the beauty of the wild, but with professionals who know where to take you. It will be an experience you will appreciate and remember forever.

What Size Luggage Do I Need For My Trip?

Planning a business trip or vacation? The first question asked is always "what size luggage will I need?" How do you determine the size, and the number of pieces to bring? It's really simple. There's a rule of thumb - and then you need to ask some questions.

What works for most people is a wheeled tote for overnight, a wheeled carry on luggage or 22" for a weekend, and the long weekend will usually be the 22" carry on luggage with an attachable tote. The wheeled tote can hold a small change of clothing and a few cosmetics. Keep in mind if you're flying, the cosmetics need to be in a three-one-one clear plastic one quart sized case, with bottles and jars of three ounces or less. You could pack the same amount in a tote without wheels, but we're at the airport for a long time these days, and wheels seem to be the easier way to go.

Geneva Womens Watches Clear

The 22" wheeled carry on luggage can easily work for the weekend, holding several changes of clothing and even shoes. You will need to adhere to the same three-one-one rule for your cosmetics if flying. Wheeled carry on luggage also comes in a 20" or 21" size for those that are flying on smaller planes, or for those who take less. Wheeled totes or regular totes can attach to the top of the smaller piece and both pieces can be wheeled together with one hand. This is the easiest way to travel. You cannot carry another purse, or briefcase, as you are limited to the one carry on piece and one personal bag when flying. There's usually an outside pocket on carry on luggage or tote bags for your travel essentials and your travel wallet. Your boarding pass and I.D. should be easily accessible when traveling. And don't forget to throw that small lightweight travel umbrella in the outside pocket!

What Size Luggage Do I Need For My Trip?

The one week trip usually needs a 25" or 26" Pullman for one person. This size will also work for two persons for a long weekend. It can hold quite a lot of clothing, shoes, incidentals, travel accessories and even an extra jacket. This size rarely goes over the fifty-pound maximum that many of the airlines are enforcing today. Always check with your individual airline to be sure you are following their particular regulations. Most of the newer luggage available now is lighter in weight than the luggage purchased years before. You may want to invest in a lighter piece of luggage, or a travel luggage scale to be sure you won't be charged.

Some of the airline charges are substantial and you may save money in the long run by purchasing a lighter-weight Pullman case. It's always a good idea to take carry on luggage for the important items you cannot afford to lose. You'll want to keep any needed medications, eyeglasses, your jewelry and other valuables with you. The wheeled tote or regular tote should attach to the top of the Pullman case for ease in wheeling through airport, train and bus terminals.

A two-week trip or longer generally requires the 27", 28" or 29" Pullman for one person. The old luggage sizes of 30", 31" or 32" will be considered oversized by the airlines and you may be charged. Generally, they consider cases over 62" when you add the length plus height plus width to be oversized. The oversized cases will usually go overweight also, and you may incur double charges. Check with your airline before packing for the trip. When two people are traveling, you may be able to pack the larger Pullman with just clothes, and take a slightly smaller case for the cosmetics, shoes and heavier items. This will probably keep both of your cases within the weight restrictions.

Many travelers today pack their heaviest items in their carry on bag to keep their larger Pullman cases from becoming overweight. Keep the new regulations in mind when packing. You can no longer pack all of your cosmetics in the carry on luggage or the tote bag. One person may carry on liquids and gels in a one quart bag, and the containers must be three ounces or less. This is the three-one-one clear plastic bag. Since we're putting these cosmetics in the Pullmans, it's making the Pullman case weigh more. And you need to double wrap your liquids, creams and gels to insure that nothing will stain your clothing.

When two of you are traveling, you will usually need to double the amount of luggage or cut back on sizes slightly. You may be able to share some cosmetics and that travel umbrella. If you are going to attend many evening functions where you'll need to change each evening that will increase the size of the luggage you'll need to pack. If it's a casual trip, you may get away with bringing less and packing a smaller piece of luggage. If you're renting a car and sharing with another couple, you'll all have to bring less. European rental cars are usually on the small size so you'll need to take that into consideration. You can often wear the heavy coat on the airplane, and may want to wear boots rather than packing them.

Some airlines have restrictions on the size and the weight of your luggage but may allow two pieces per person. Remember that travelers rarely wear everything they bring. There are also many new travel items like the UBU reversible lightweight jacket, or the OneSole shoes with choices of hundreds of different tops. If you don't mind paying extra on the airline, you will not have to be as rigid when packing. Expandable Pullman cases are wonderful if you plan to bring back a lot of souvenirs. However, do check with your airline, and watch your weight. The more you travel, the easier packing becomes, so plan a lot of trips!

Ancient and Modern Delhi

A thousand years of history are to be found in Delhi, capital of India and its third largest city. Located in the north where the country narrows between Pakistan in the west and China and Tibet in the east, Delhi was the capital of Moslem India from the 12th to the 19th century. It has historically been the hub of vital trade routes and held a strategic position at the gateway to the fertile plain of the Ganges -- the social, religious and cultural lifeline of India.

There are two Delhi cities now, the New and the Old. There have been at least eight recorded cities on and around the site, the oldest being Indraprastha, in existence since the third or fourth century B.C. There are many legends regarding the founding of the city and some archaeological dates as to its age. The Tomar Rajputs founded and fortified the walls of Dhillika, the first of the medieval cities, in the 9th century A.D. and were overthrown in the 12th century by the Cauhans of Jaipur who built a second defensive wall. Turkish invaders in 1193 ended Hindu rule and began the new Islamic era of the city. Subsequent cities were added adjacent to the more ancient ones. Shah Jahan, famous creator of the Taj Mahal, was responsible for the seventh Delhi, which he named Shahjahanabad. It was the Mughal capital until 1857. As the Mughal power waned to be replaced by that of the British East India Company, so Delhi lost its prestige and became just another provincial city.

Geneva Womens Watches Clear

In 1911 the British chose Delhi as their capital, transferring the viceregal headquarters from Calcutta. Plans were soon underway to build New Delhi to the south of Shahjahanabad and Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, two British architects, were brought in to design it. The center of the plan consisted of the Rashtrapati Bhavan or Viceregal Lodge (which is now the Presidential Residence), Parliament House, the Secretariats, Memorial Arch and Connaught Circus. The city was designed in a mixture of European Renaissance and Oriental styles to provide a gracious garden setting for the colonial rulers, but after Independence in 1947, the city began a surge of both horizontal and vertical growth and now incorporates all the older cities, continuing to expand as the population increases.

Ancient and Modern Delhi

Thanks to its long history, its many rulers and religions, Delhi is a paradoxical city. It has within its limits many of India's most ancient and revered buildings and monuments, illustrating all the stages of its development, and is also a bustling modern metropolis of almost six million people.

The Red Fort

On the west bank of the Yaumana River, on the eastern perimeter of Delhi's walled city, stands the Red Fort. Residence and administrative center, it was built from 1639 to 1648 under the supervision of two architects. It is a formidable war-like structure with octagonal and round bastions and two symmetrical watchtowers overlooking its red sandstone walls which surround an irregular octagon 3,200 by 1,600 feet and reach 100 feet high. It is surrounded by a deep moat fed from the river to the east. Only two great gates, the Lahori Gate (the main entrance) in the west wall and the Delhi Gate in the south wall, remain of the original five.

Inside the Lahori Gate is an arcade of shops, called Chata Chauk, which was originally housing for Shah Jahan's court. Beyond this is the Drum House, or Hathipol, a parking place for the elephants of visitors. Intricate carvings in the sandstone are typical late Mughal design and were originally painted in gold and bright colors. Much of the original structure of the inner fort has been destroyed, especially during the Indian Mutiny in 1857, and lawns and gardens now replace the galleries which were built inside the walls.

The Hall of Public Audience, located between the inner court and the royal palaces, was the administrative center of the capital, but it was an overwhelming showplace too. Much of its sumptuousness must now be imagined, but the marble canopied throne with its backdrop of marble inlaid in the classical style still remain. Six miniature palaces stood along the eastern wall of the fort and contained apartments for the royal household, including the harem. They were connected by the Stream of Paradise, a small canal of scented waters, the Nahri-Bahisht. Five of these gem-like buildings remain intact. Also situated along the east wall but secluded behind a sandstone wall are the royal baths, which face the Pearl Mosque built by Aurangzeb. The outer walls are aligned with the walls of the fort, but the inner walls are at an angle so that they are correctly aligned facing Mecca.

The Life Bestowing Gardens, originally to the north of the mosque, were designed to imitate the gardens of paradise and contained pavilions, fountains and plants in a formal arrangement. Silver swings were hung on silk cords inside pavilions for the ladies of the court to sit and watch the rains during the Hindu festival of Teej, which celebrates the onset of the monsoon.

Taj Mahal -- "The Crowned Palace"

Probably the most recognized structure in the world and also one of the most beautiful, the graceful lines of the Taj Mahal are among the many architectural splendors attributable to Shan Jahan, which have brought him worldwide recognition.

Built in memory of and to enshrine his first wife, Mumtaz Mahal, the building was begun on her death in 1631. An influential and beloved companion and advisor, Mumtaz Mahal was always consulted on affairs of state and was in fact the one to affix the royal seal on official documents. She died during the birth of their fourteenth child and was sadly mourned by her husband who, as a widower, radically altered his lifestyle. He handed over much of the responsibility for state functions and military endeavors to his sons and devoted his energies to his life-long interest in architecture.

From his teen years when he had remodeled his apartments at Kabul with great skill and taste, Shah Jahan had always actively participated in the impressive building projects of his reign. He designed the structures and decorations, made scale working models and supervised the building. Experience had well prepared him for what was to be his crowning achievement, the Taj Mahal. There has been much speculation as to who could have been the architect and various people have been suggested, from a Venetian goldsmith to a Turk named Usted Isa Afandi (onetime pupil of Sinan, the best known Turkish architect), and an Indian from Lahore named Usted Ahmad. It is quite probable, though, that while many architects, artisans and craftsmen contributed to the construction and modification, the concept and controlling hand was that of Shah Jahan. The style is a synthesis of existing traits of Mughal architecture. The use of gardens and stone water courses is reminiscent of the style prevalent in Kabul which had been utilized by Babur. The slender minarets and inlays in marble are seen on other tombs such as that of Akbar, while the swelling dome and arched alcoves are Persian in style. The Taj Mahal is felt to be the epitome of Mughal architecture.

Work on the project had progressed so well that by 1643 the annual memorial service to Mumtaz Mahal was held within its walls, though it would be a further ten years before the complex was complete. The builders and designers of the Taj Mahal were conversant with the rules of perspective and successfully incorporated many features which heightened the symmetry and grace of the structure by optical illusion. Although the height and width of the building are equal, the appearance is one of towering height. Reflections in the water add to this illusion while rows of cypress and evergreens accentuate the perspective.

Constructed of white marble, the outer facing of the main octagonal structure is decorated with Koranic verse carved into the stone. Designed and executed by a Persian, Amat Khan Shirazi, the most talented calligrapher in the empire, the decorative writings are further enhanced by panels of floral patterns in a realistic style, geometric designs and graceful arabesques. The base is also white marble 300 feet square and inside are mosaics inset with semi-precious stones. The central chamber stands above the burial vaults and houses two cenotaphs surrounded by openwork alabaster screens, also decorated with semi-precious stones. The interior is illuminated in the daytime by diffused light filtered through the translucent alabaster dome and the intricately perforated window screens of the same material.

A terrace surrounds the main structure and is guarded at each corner by a slim, exquisitely proportioned minaret, each 133 feet tall, which give balance and grace to the massive central edifice. A rectangular lake in the foreground acts as a reflecting surface and adds to the perspective. The Taj Mahal is reminiscent of the exquisite two-dimensional Persian and Mughal miniatures depicting ethereal fairy tale palaces, while its size, architectural complexity and scientific accuracy of perspective and symmetry have caused it to fascinate and delight all who visit it.

Jaipur, "The Pink City"

The Pink City of Jaipur in Rajasthan was built in 1728 by Maharajah Sawai Jai Singh II. It was not pink at its inception. It was painted the traditional color of welcome in honor of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's consort, who visited in 1883. The city is an eclectic mixture of Hindu, Mughal, Persian and Jain styles. It replaced the old capital of Amber which was more vulnerable to attack. It was arranged on a grid of eight squares around a central square which contained the palace and administration buildings. North of the central block was the Brahmapuri (the City of God), home of the priests and scholars which was protected by gardens and lakes. The northwest quadrant was actually a hill from which the Nahargarh, or Tiger Fort, overlooked and protected the city. From this vantage point the layout of the city may be clearly seen. The streets are laid out in perfect proportion, the main thoroughfares are 108 feet wide (a Hindu holy number) and decrease in size according to use. Standardization of shop sizes, wide even sidewalks, houses of an even height (half the width of the street) all give the city a gracious, elegant appearance. Deep stone awnings protect the shop fronts from the merciless sun and create a pleasant atmosphere in which to browse.

A bustling commercial center, Jaipur is reminiscent of the ancient Middle East, the people straight out of the "Arabian Nights." The women's abundant jewelry represents the wealth of the family and can be quite overwhelming. This is one of the last strongholds of the practice of sati, the custom of Indian wives immolating themselves on the funeral pyre of their husband. Though this has been illegal since 1829, a recent recorded case was in 1980 and received much support from local women.

Fatehpur Sikri, "Victory City"

For four hundred years pilgrims, both Hindu and Muslim, have visited the tomb of Shaikh Salim Chrishti at Fatehpur Sikri. It was built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar to honor a Muslim mystic who, having assured him that his lack of heirs was not permanent, promised not one but three sons to the emperor. When the first of these sons was born the next year, a great mosque and a new capital were built at Sikri to honor the occasion, and when the shaikh died in 1572 his mausoleum was added to the site.

Akbar's fortunes had changed for the better and in the next year he succeeded in conquering the immense kingdom of Gujarat in the west. To commemorate this achievement he built the biggest gateway in India, 176 feet high, to grace his new City of Victory. This city became a focal point and home to artists, artisans, soldiers and priests --- a huge population all working directly or indirectly for the comfort and splendor of the emperor.

During the year of 1584, just fourteen years after the inauguration of the new capital, Akbar left on one of his campaigns to the north and never returned to stay. The reason for this abandonment is not known, though theories have been put forward -- lack of water and the ingrained nomadic instincts of the people are two, but the mysterious abandoned city keeps its own secrets. The battlements are crumbling, farm animals graze and peck in the ruins. All signs of human habitation are gone; the rooms give no clue as to the people who lived there, the courtiers, the five thousand wives, the noblemen, all are gone without trace.

A thousand elephants and an immense army were based here and were led on numerous invasions, often not as bloody as those of the emperor's ancestors, and the lot of the conquered was often much improved after conquest. Akbar was an able administrator, innovative and well before his time -- his postal system of runners was capable of delivering a letter 78 miles in a day. His justice was swift and punishment was designed to fit the crime. Torture was believed to ensure truth in evidence while executions were held only after a few days of consideration. Meals were sumptuous, the main one each day boasted forty courses served on Chinese porcelain (legend had it that this fine ware would break in the presence of poison). Water from the Ganges, sent in sealed jars, was the only beverage the emperor drank.

Khajuraho

Madhya Pradesh, the geographical heartland of India, is primarily high plateau country. In a remote corner of this state, far off the beaten track, lie the state's most extraordinary attractions - the temples of Khajuraho. Superb examples of Indo-Aryan architecture, these structures are embellished with beautifully wrought stone carvings, primarily celebrating the pleasures of sex. This Kama Sutra carved in stone commemorates the beauty of the "celestial maidens," of gods and goddesses, and real and mythological animals.

Built during the Chandala Period, the temples date from a century-long burst of creativity which lasted from AD 950 to 1050. It is still a mystery why these immense structures were built in this isolated spot which, as far as can be determined, never was a population center and is not a comfortable place to live, due to its long, hot, dry season. It is also a subject of intense speculation as to where the work force came from to accomplish such a monumental building project in just one hundred years. One advantage of the site choice emerged years later when, due to its remoteness, the Khajuraho Temple escaped the ravages of the Muslim invaders in their zeal to destroy all the "idolatrous" temples in India.

The temples of Khajuraho are built in three groups, the largest and most important being in the western enclosure, which is also the best-kept. Following a plan that shows little variation, each temple is approached through an entrance porch, ardhamandapa, behind which is the hall or mandapa. A main hall, mahamandapa, follows, which is surrounded by a corridor supported by pillars. A vestibule, antaraloa, leads into the inner sanctum garbagriha, where the image of the dedicatory god is found.

The exterior of each building is impressive as wave after wave of towers culminate in a soaring sikhara, which tops the inner sanctum. The baroque line of the vertical is offset by ornate horizontal friezes of sculpture, which form a carefully integrated element of the entire building.

Most of the temples are aligned east-west and are made of granite and sandstone. They lack the enclosing walls of contemporary structures in other locations, but often had four smaller shrines at the corners, many of which have not survived. One of the best preserved of all the structures is the Lakshmana Temple, in the western group. This temple was dedicated to Vishnu and is one of the earliest built on the site (between AD 930 and 950).

Varanasi

One of the most important pilgrimage sites in all of India, Varanasi, the "Eternal City," has been a center of learning and civilization for some 2000 years. Nearby, on the banks of the sacred Ganges, the Buddha first preached his message of enlightenment 25 centuries ago. The city was sacked frequently by Muslim invaders from the 11th century on, and later became a center for Muslim worship also. Moghul Emperor Aurangzeb destroyed the majority of the temples in existence or converted them into mosques.

Varanasi has, over its history, been called "Kashi" and "Benares," with the present name translating as the "City between two rivers." Situated in the middle of a poor, backward, agrarian, and overpopulated area, it is a shining jewel of learning and literature for Hindus and Sanskrit scholars, and one of the most preferred and auspicious places in all of India for the devout to go to die. The many ghats that line the riverbanks are always crowded with pilgrims who bathe in the murky waters of the Ganges in religious purification ceremonies.
